British GT: Unlucky Team Parker Racing Audi at the Silverstone 500

By Tarek Ramchani

Silverstone International Cirucit played host to the fourth round of the 2015 British GT Championship. A single Audi R8 LMS ultra entered the event coming from Team Parker Racing.

An Audi regular team in the Blancpain Endurance Series, Team Parker Racing took part in the special Silverstonne 500, a 3-hour endurance race. The white and green #24 Audi R8 LMS ultra was driven by Ian Loggie and Callum Macleod.

The British Audi Sport customer racing team performed well in the qualifying session on Saturday. Ian Loggie and Callum Macleod made it inside the Top 10 and qualified in a strong eight place.

Unfortunately, bad luck hit Team Parker Racing on race day. The Audi started the race very well challenging British GT regulars with Ian Loggie behind the wheel. Few laps later, Ian Loggie first had a spin and then was forced to head to pitlane. Race over for the #24 Audi R8 LMS ultra.

The next race for Team Parker Racing and their Audi will be at Paul Ricard in Blancpain Endurance Series.

Pirelli World Challenge: GMG Racing Audi and David Welch heading to Detroit Grand Prix

GMG Racing Press Release

With the tricky bumps of Detroit’s scenic Belle Isle playing host to this weekend’s 10th and 11th rounds of the Pirelli World Challenge GT championship, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will put their efforts behind experienced racer David Welch for the upcoming Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. After a banner event for the driver at the most recent street race in Long Beach, the team saw a natural fit to put their resources behind the veteran. Additionally, in a last minute change of fortune, team owner James Sofronas will be forced to miss the event due to a shop injury suffered this past weekend.

“David adds considerably to our program, and it will be great to have him on for Detroit,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “Long Beach was a great result for him and the team, and I think he’ll represent our team, as well as everyone at Numerix, very well. I’m personally very disappointed that I won’t be able to make it, we had a little bit of a SNAFU at the shop this weekend and sadly my foot took the brunt of the punishment. These things happen and hopefully I’ll be recovered in time for the next round.”

Driving the No. 21 Numerix Audi R8 LMS ultra, Welch will head to Detroit after a very successful run at the most recent Grand Prix of Long Beach. Gaining 16 spots en route to a fifth place finish, the veteran’s execution of pace and patience have proven a great commodity on street courses, which should show well at the tricky Belle Isle course.

Welch most recently visited the event in 2012, where he finished sixth.

“It’s great to be back with GMG for Detroit,” stated Welch. “Our last race together at Long Beach definitely showed the potential of our program, hopefully this weekend will run with less yellows. Regardless, the team has done an excellent job getting me up to speed and I’m confident ahead of the weekend. I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone at Numerix for bringing me here, I’m sure we’ll show well.”

David and the team will once again carry the colors of Numerix, the market’s leading provider of risk analytics technology for the pricing, structuring, modeling and valuation any derivative instrument, or portfolio. Numerix risk solutions enable global financial institutions to understand performance, analyze and anticipate future derivatives risks with unparalleled speed and accuracy.

Practice for the event begins this Friday, May 29, with Race 10 taking place on May 30 at 9:50AM ET, with Sunday’s race taking place the next day at 12:10PM. MOST NOTABLY, Sunday’s race will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network at 12PM ET. The team will provide continuous updates via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

TUSC: Paul Miller Racing Audi ready for Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle

Paul Miller Racing Press Release

Paul Miller Racing, and team drivers Christopher Haase and Dion von Moltke, come into Saturday’s Sports Car Classic at Belle Isle leading the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) point standings and seeking repeat podium finishes at both Detroit and in the 2015 racing season in the No. 48 Castrol EDGE Audi R8 LMS.

Round four of 10 on the 2015 IMSA TUDOR Championship GTD schedule, the Sports Car Classic can be seen live on FOX Sports 2 and IMSA.com this Saturday, May 30, at 12 p.m. EDT. An immediate encore telecast airs two hours later on Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT on FOX Sports 1.

One race ago and earlier this month at Laguna Seca, Haase and von Moltke co-drove to a second-place finish to take the GTD class championship lead after the first three rounds of the season. Last year at Detroit, Haase and then co-driver, Bryce Miller, finished third on the tricky Belle Isle street circuit.

A win in Saturday’s 100-minute sprint – the shortest race on the 2015 schedule – will not only be the first this year for Haase and von Moltke but would also ensure that the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing team will leave the Motor City still on top of the championship standings.

“The advantage is that leading gives the whole team maybe an extra push to work even harder still,” said Haase, who is in his second season with Paul Miller Racing. “There are no disadvantages, but at the end we just should focus on our race, not about the championship standings.”

Haase drove the No. 48 to the finish in last year’s third-place showing at Belle Isle, but his first-year teammate von Moltke has also made his mark in an Audi at Belle Isle. In 2012 at Detroit, von Moltke was the first driver to a lead a race in the United States at the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS.

“It was a very special moment to lead the first laps for the Audi R8 in the U.S.,” von Moltke said, “although we didn't lead enough! The car was very good over the bumps and that played into our hands well that year. This year I don't know how bumpy it will be, but the car gives you a lot of confidence as a driver, which is vital on a street circuit. Hopefully we can lead some more laps this weekend, but more importantly lead the last lap.”

Paul Miller Racing is off to the most successful start of any GTD team this year. The Laguna Seca runner-up, a repeat podium in its own right after a second-place finish in the same race in 2014 – followed a pair of fifth-place finishes in the season-opening races at Daytona and Sebring earlier this year.

No other GTD team has finished in the top five in each of 2015’s first three races. The No. 48 Paul Miller Racing team also closed out last season with a victory in the Petit Le Mans finale at Road Atlanta.

“We are a great team, and we know how to win,” Haase said. You never know what will happen on race weekend but leading the standings doesn’t change how we will approach the race at all!”

Detroit is the first of 2015’s final seven races that will decide this year’s IMSA TUDOR Championships. While the No. 48 team and drivers are happy for their fast start, everyone on the Paul Miller Racing team realizes the season has yet to fully play out.

“It's always very nice to be in the points lead but, in all honesty, until after the checkered flag at the end of the season it means absolutely nothing,” von Moltke said. “We may get a slightly better spot on pit lane, but no one races you different or hands you anything. You have to push just as hard to try and win races and achieve good finishes, and that's where our entire team is focused.”

The Audi R8 LMS seemed to perform well on the 13-turn, 2.360-mile Belle Isle course last year, Paul Miller Racing’s first season with Audi.

“So far, Detroit looks like a good track for the Audi, but each year can change things,” Haase said. “You need predictable car balance and a good position in qualifying at Detroit, and you have to stay calm in any case.”

Heading into Saturday’s race, Haase and von Moltke are one point clear of the co-drivers of the second-place Ferrari team, 87 – 86. The co-drivers of the third-place Porsche have 83 points.

The No. 48 ranks second in the IMSA TUDOR GTD team championship standings, trailing the leading No. 93 Riley Motorsports Dodge Viper, which is not competing at Belle Isle, by two points.

A two-day event, Friday’s schedule includes two practice sessions before that afternoon’s qualifying, which can be seen live on IMSA.com at 5:10 p.m. EDT. Race-day Saturday begins with a 20 minute warm-up with the Sports Car Classic scheduled to green at 12:05 p.m. EDT.

Noteworthy

- Recent improvements to the Belle Isle track have von Moltke even more optimistic than usual about the No. 48 Audi and Paul Miller Racing’s key personnel. “Detroit is a very tricky and technical street circuit,” von Moltke said. “In years past, it was so bumpy that it could make Sebring look like a smooth, European street circuit. The track has been repaved this year which will really change setups for engineers and driver line potentially. You really need a car with good mechanical grip to do well on a street circuit, Audi has given us a car that has that, and we have the best engineer in the paddock to maximize our package in Dave Fullerton.”

Blancpain Endurance Series: Promising kick-off with Thong and Lee at Silverstone

Phoenix Racing Press Release

Phoenix Racing experienced a promising kick-off to the collaboration with Audi Sport customer racing Asia and the two Hong Kong Chinese Shaun Thong and Marchy Lee in round two of the Blancpain Endurance Series (BES) at Silverstone. The positive assessment following the race in England was not even affected by the ultimately disappointing 34th place for Thong, Lee and Markus Winkelhock which, instead of their possible top-ten result and following their good eleventh place on the grid in the impressive field of 62 GT3 sports cars, was caused by a spin.

From the first lap on the UK Grand Prix circuit the merely 18-year-old Shaun Thong, who also competes in the new Audi Sport TT Cup, and Marchy Lee, the winner of the 2012 Audi R8 LMS Cup, gelled well with the team and, together with their seasoned team-mate Markus Winkelhock, quickly worked out a good set-up for the Audi R8 LMS ultra. The #6 Phoenix Audi had established itself at the front of the field that boasted tremendous strength in terms of quantity and quality from the first qualifying session on. Ex GT World Champion Markus Winkelhock took third place in pre-qualifying. In the three-part qualifying session drizzle caused changeable conditions and thus made the task for the three Phoenix drivers even more difficult. Despite running on slicks, young Shaun Thong clinched a remarkable twelfth place. In the second session, Marchy Lee, like his young team-mate, showed a strong performance as well by setting the eighth-best time. In the final third qualifying segment Winkelhock positioned the #6 Audi in eleventh place. “Due to the drizzle and heavy traffic with so many cars on track I wasn’t able to convert our potential into a really optimal result in qualifying,” commented Markus Winkelhock.

The former Formula One driver managed a very good start to the three-hour race, was able to stay out of harm’s way in the close field by driving cautiously and immediately made up several places. “With respect to the car we were in a very good position and managed to keep the pace of the front runners,” said Winkelhock, who turned over driving duties to Shaun Thong at the first pit stop. The 18-year-old talent drove prudently and fast, but on the last lap before pitting spun and got stuck in the gravel trap in his Phoenix Audi. Recovering the car from the gravel cost about four minutes and, as a result, caused the #6 Audi to lose a lot of ground. Marchy Lee took over the R8 cockpit for the third stint and ultimately drove the GT3 sports car across the finish line in 34th place by setting consistently fast lap times.

“Shaun and Marchy both did a superb job,” Markus Winkelhock said in praise of the two drivers. “Without the spin, which can easily happen in such a commotion, a place in the top ten would have been possible and that would have been absolutely great in this strong and large field.” Phoenix GT Team Manager Bernhard Demmer felt the same way: “The foundation has been laid. The two superbly gelled with the team and drove a prudent and fast race despite the fact that the result wasn’t satisfactory.”

For Shaun Thong, Marchy Lee and Markus Winkelhock round three of the Blancpain Endurance Series at Paul Ricard, France, will be on the agenda on 19/20 June. “We already tested at Paul Ricard so we’re determined to make better use of our potential there,” says Winkelhock. Before the BES event Ernst Moser’s team based in Meuspath at the Nürburgring will be travelling to round two of the DTM at the Lausitzring on 31 May and to round three of the Blancpain Sprint Series at Zolder, Belgium, on 05 June.

DTM: Audi travels to the Lausitzring DTM round two with tailwind

Audi Press Release

As the leader of all three classifications (drivers’, manufacturers’ and teams’), Audi heads to the second DTM weekend of the year – with a premiere: On Saturday, May 30, at the Lausitzring, a DTM race will be held on Saturday night for the first time – aired on prime time immediately before the DFB Cup final in Berlin, which is only about 130 kilometers away.

With two victories and two pole positions, Audi managed a near-perfect start to the new DTM season. The squad headed by Dieter Gass would like to pick up where it left off in the opener, although the Head of DTM at Audi Sport cautions against excessive expectations. “We had a very good opening DTM weekend and we want to again fight for top places at the Lausitzring. However, the field is incredibly close and we do not underestimate our competitors. Mercedes have traditionally been strong at the Lausitzring. BMW will try to come back. And we have to add between five and ten kilograms of performance weights to our cars following the two victories at Hockenheim.”

Additionally, the 3.478-kilometer Lausitzring with its mix of fast, semi-fast and slow turns, plus a long start-finish straight with top speeds of about 240 km/h, is a race track that Audi was frequently struggling with in the past. An Audi driver crossed the finish line as the winner there only twice (in 2005 and 2011) – in one event with an extremely small advantage. In 2005, Mattias Ekström prevailed in a gripping duel against Gary Paffett in the Mercedes-Benz. “Gary was on my heels during the whole race,” the Audi driver recalls. “I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes.” Ten years later, there might well be a repeat of the duel between the two most successful active DTM drivers.

The current leader of the standings, Edoardo Mortara, is expecting a special race in Brandenburg. “For the first time in my career, I’m at the very top, that does make me feel proud,” says the Italian who, due to an unsuccessful tire strategy, experienced one of the most difficult DTM races in his career at the Lausitzring last year. “This shows how close success and failure are in the DTM,” says Dieter Gass. “With the new format of two races per weekend and an extremely tight schedule for everyone, this is the case even more than in the past. You could see that at Hockenheim with Jamie Green: On Saturday, he won and on Sunday he finished without points. With Mattias Ekström, it was exactly the other way around.”

Nico Müller travels to the Lausitzring with a tailwind. The youngster won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in the all-new Audi R8 LMS. As a result, his fans will have to get used to a new ‘hairstyle’ – at least temporarily. Following their victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, Nico Müller and his team-mates had their heads shaved bald.

Following the successful opener at Hockenheim, the fans can look forward to another entertaining DTM weekend, which includes the IDM Superbike Championship as well. Practice in the DTM is on Friday, while a qualifying session and a race are on the agenda on both Saturday and Sunday. ARD will broadcast the first race on Saturday (May 30) at 18.00 CEST and the second one on Sunday (May 31) at 14.00 CEST. Live streaming will be provided at www.dtm.com/live.

On Saturday evening, motorsport and soccer fans will have the opportunity to experience two top sporting events in succession on TV: the DTM race and then thereafter the DFB Cup final between Borussia Dortmund and VfL Wolfsburg. “Two TV treats,” promises Timo Scheider, who, in third place, was the best Audi driver in the DTM race at the Lausitzring last year and is a great BVB fan himself. “Naturally, I’m going to watch the Cup final and keep my fingers crossed for Dortmund,” says Scheider. “But first of all, I’ve got to convert the good performance of the Audi RS 5 DTM into points in the DTM.”
