British GT: Unlucky Team Parker Racing Audi at the Silverstone 500

By Tarek Ramchani

Silverstone International Cirucit played host to the fourth round of the 2015 British GT Championship. A single Audi R8 LMS ultra entered the event coming from Team Parker Racing.

An Audi regular team in the Blancpain Endurance Series, Team Parker Racing took part in the special Silverstonne 500, a 3-hour endurance race. The white and green #24 Audi R8 LMS ultra was driven by Ian Loggie and Callum Macleod.

The British Audi Sport customer racing team performed well in the qualifying session on Saturday. Ian Loggie and Callum Macleod made it inside the Top 10 and qualified in a strong eight place.

Unfortunately, bad luck hit Team Parker Racing on race day. The Audi started the race very well challenging British GT regulars with Ian Loggie behind the wheel. Few laps later, Ian Loggie first had a spin and then was forced to head to pitlane. Race over for the #24 Audi R8 LMS ultra.

The next race for Team Parker Racing and their Audi will be at Paul Ricard in Blancpain Endurance Series.

British GT: United Autosports Ginetta GT4 drivers test Audi R8 LMS ultra

By Johan Laubscher

United Autosports was out testing at Donington Park today. Their 2012 specification Audi R8 LMS ultra had two new drivers behind the wheel.

Carl Breeze and Luke Davenport, who drove the team to the 2014 Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup Teams’ title, both experienced their first taste of the Audi GT3 machine during the test.

British GT: United Autosports British GT Team recover after Brands Hatch practice accident

United Autosports Press Release

United Autosports overcame adversity to post a hard-earned and unrepresentative 17th place in the penultimate round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Brands Hatch (31 Aug). The Anglo-American team’s regular driver Matt Bell was partnered by Porsche Club GB Champion John McCullagh for the first time and came from 21st on the 31-car grid to achieve a top-20 place after a heroic effort by the United Autosports crew.

Ex-rally driver McCullagh, makinghis maiden race appearance for UA in the Audi R8 LMS, made a small mistake exiting Druids Hairpin in Free Practice 1.

The resulting contact with the barriers, albeit at low speed, caused significant damage to the left side of the Audi plus suspension and steering damage. The crew repaired the car allowing the combined times of Bell and McCullagh to qualify 21st, with Bell clocking the best overall Sector 2 time.

McCullagh, who had completed just 13 “flying” laps of the Grand Prix circuit before starting the race, made a good start and ran an impressive 16th early on but pitted with eight minutes on the clock believing, incorrectly as it turned out, that the Audi had a steering issue. The team quickly checked and sent him out but he was two laps down.

Bell took over the Audi with 55mins remaining, McCullagh having recovered well to 14th before making his mandatory pit-stop. Bell, who had set the eighth quickest time in the morning warm-up, immediately set laps times similar to the top-six, enroute to an unrepresentative 17th place finish.

Matt Bell (GB). Age: 25. Born: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne & Wear, England. Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England.

“It’s been a tough weekend – symptomatic of the entire year. Missing the second half of the opening practice session and all of the second, understandably made qualifying difficult for us. The guys made minor changes to the Audi overnight which further improved it. I settled in to a decent pace in my stint.”

John McCullagh (GB). Age: 50. Born: Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Lives: Northallerton, North Yorkshire.

“Qualifying was a difficult challenge and basically a glorified practice session after my accident. Exiting Druids I made a small but costly mistake, the impact with the barriers causing a lot of damage despite the relatively low-speed of the impact. The United Autosports team did an amazing job repairing the Audi. I made a good start in the race getting past at least four cars by Surtees [Corner] but was contacted by the Bentley at Druids and so I pitted as a precaution. Unfortunately this dropped us down the order. I was satisfied with my race pace and only sorry that I wasn’t able to hand the car over to Matt inside the top-ten as we had planned.”

Richard Dean, Team Owner and Managing Director, United Autosports:

“All year we’ve been on the pace with the Audi but unfortunately when you encounter an issue losing time and laps, it’s impossible to recover. Inexperience with the R8 caught John out in practice and we were playing catch up from that moment after missing valuable track time. Unfortunately losing two laps when John pitted cost us any chance of claiming a top-10 place. Matt’s pace in his stint was top-six and top-three at times. It’s disappointing but it’s been our story in BGT this year. Hopefully we can at least finish the season on a high at Donington.”

British GT: John McCullagh joins Bell in United Autosports Audi for Brands Hatch

United Autosports Press Release

United Autosports regular Matt Bell is joined by reigning Porsche Club GB Champion John McCullagh for the penultimate round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship staged at Brands Hatch on Sunday (31 Aug).

Matt finished sixth in last year’s corresponding race with Mark Patterson, the pair failing to win the 2013 BGT title by just two points, and is targeting a top-six repeat result with “newcomer” McCullagh.

Ex-rally driver McCullagh, an engineer who has been a director for 20 years with the MMC Engineering Group based on Teesside, recorded 17 class poles, 14 class wins and 14 class fastest laps in last year’s Porsche Club GB Championship.

The two-hour event marks McCullagh’s maiden race for United Autosports, his first in an Audi R8 LMS, first GT3 class race and first on the Brands 2.433 mile Grand Prix circuit.

#23 Henderson – Audi R8 LMS ultra

Matt Bell (GB). Age: 25. Born: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne & Wear, England. Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England.
“Brands Hatch is one of Britain’s most iconic circuits so I always enjoy going back there. It presents similar challenges to Oulton Park – it’s bumpy and narrow with lots of elevation changes so there’s pressure to get the set-up right and get up the front in qualifying otherwise it means a difficult race.

“It would be very nice and quite rare this year, if the Audi is not assaulted on-track during the race – a ‘clean’ race would make a very welcome change. It will be John’s first foray into GT3 so the main objective will be to get him comfortable and up to speed in practice. He’s tested well in the Audi and so hopefully it will come as naturally to him as his racing a Porsche which he’s done successfully for a number of years and we’ll have a good weekend.”

John McCullagh (GB). Age: 50. Born: Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Lives: Northallerton, North Yorkshire

“I’m looking forward to making my British GT Championship debut, having my first race with United Autosports, with Matt, in an Audi and on the Brands GP track. I’ve raced on the Brands Indy circuit a number of times with success but can’t wait to get out onto the GP track.

“I tested the R8 LMS for the first time this month at Silverstone and thoroughly enjoyed myself finding the Audi a pleasure to drive. It’s extremely well balanced, puts the power down well and is awesome under braking. Matt and I clocked up almost 200 miles and each mile passed off without any dramas.

“I rallied between 1986-91 competing in the Vauxhall Nova Challenge before competing in the British National and British Open championships. I decided to try my hand at circuit racing in 2011, having a couple of outings in the Porsche GB Club Championship, and am now in my third season in that series having won it last year driving a Porsche 968.

“Matt is a family friend and gave me some coaching in 2012 while I’ve followed the fortunes of him in BGT with the United Autosports team in recent years and I’m looking forward to working with Richard and his team.”

Richard Dean, Team Owner and Managing Director, United Autosports:
“We make our way to Brands Hatch with the hope of getting a decent result after a mixed weekend at Spa last month. We also welcome John McCullagh to the team for the two-hour race. He has tested the Audi a couple of times since he agreed to join us but this will be the first time he is in a race situation with the R8. We are confident John and Matt will make a good partnership for the Brands weekend.”

British GT: Mark Patterson rejoins Matt Bell in United Autosports Audi R8 LMS ultra for Spa

United Autosports Press Release

United Autosports travels to the magnificent Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium aiming for a top-three in the two, one-hour races on Saturday (12 July).

The Anglo-American team welcomes back America-based businessman Mark Patterson to partner Matt Bell in their Audi R8 LMS ultra with both drivers relishing the challenge one of the world’s most demanding tracks has to offer.

Bell, along with former UA co-driver Michael Gausch, recorded fifth and sixth places the last time Spa was on the BGT calendar in 2011 while UA competed in the Spa 24 Hours later that year and also in 2012 and ’13. Indeed UA raced in the annual 24 hour race in 2010 – the team’s first year of competition.

#23 Allied World / Henderson – Audi R8 LMS ultra

Matt Bell (GB). Age: 25. Born: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne & Wear, England. Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England.

“Spa is a track I love, easily my favourite on the calendar, so I’m looking forward to going back there. We will have Mark back in the Audi and we’ve got unfinished business in my view.

“Having had wins and podiums cruelly taken away from us earlier this year, it’s an opportunity for us to rectify things and post a result that we deserve! Mark and I know the track very well having both competed in the Spa 24 hours on multiple occasions, so hopefully we can put everything together and take home some trophies.”

Mark Patterson (USA). Age: 62. Born: Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Lives: Bronxville, New York State, USA.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have competed on over 50 great tracks around the world – two of them are standouts and one of those is Spa. Every visit provides a newfound insight into something more daring, more challenging than the time before.

“Getting a quick lap time at Spa is more gratifying than almost on any other track in the world. You must master the tricky tight Le Source, then immediately it’s down through the incomparable Eau Rouge, the downhill triple ‘slippery’ corners ending in Pouhon, one of the world’s greatest double apex’s ever designed and then cap your courage journey in sixth gear with a no-brake attempt at Blanchimont.

“Weather always plays a part in the outcome of races there, either across the entire track or just on parts of it, making driver feedback and engineer choices always a race determining factor.

“The Audi runs well in all the technically challenging parts of Spa but we have to make up for straight line speed issues on the lengthy runs in at least two parts of the track. I can’t wait to get into the two-race format in one day. Matt and I are overdue a good result, so here’s hoping for a podium at Spa which I’ve yet to experience there.”

Richard Dean, Team Owner and Managing Director, United Autosports:

“If we can qualify in the top-six then rostrum finishes are possible. Spa has always been kind to us. We won’t necessarily be the fastest on the straights but we’ll be in good shape around the high-speed sweeping sections.

“Mark will be back for Spa and he loves the Belgian track while Matt is good around there so we’ll head there in a confident frame of mind especially after recording sixth and seventh place finishes last time out at Snetterton.”
