By Tarek Ramchani

GMG Racing team owner James Sofronas will drive the #14 Audi R8 LMS ultra. James Sofronas is having an unlucky season in Pirelli World Challenge, the 2013 series' runner-up will try to bounce back and collect big points.

Pirelli World Challenge: GMG Racing Audi and David Welch heading to Detroit Grand Prix

GMG Racing Press Release

With the tricky bumps of Detroit’s scenic Belle Isle playing host to this weekend’s 10th and 11th rounds of the Pirelli World Challenge GT championship, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will put their efforts behind experienced racer David Welch for the upcoming Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. After a banner event for the driver at the most recent street race in Long Beach, the team saw a natural fit to put their resources behind the veteran. Additionally, in a last minute change of fortune, team owner James Sofronas will be forced to miss the event due to a shop injury suffered this past weekend.

“David adds considerably to our program, and it will be great to have him on for Detroit,” stated GMG team owner James Sofronas. “Long Beach was a great result for him and the team, and I think he’ll represent our team, as well as everyone at Numerix, very well. I’m personally very disappointed that I won’t be able to make it, we had a little bit of a SNAFU at the shop this weekend and sadly my foot took the brunt of the punishment. These things happen and hopefully I’ll be recovered in time for the next round.”

Driving the No. 21 Numerix Audi R8 LMS ultra, Welch will head to Detroit after a very successful run at the most recent Grand Prix of Long Beach. Gaining 16 spots en route to a fifth place finish, the veteran’s execution of pace and patience have proven a great commodity on street courses, which should show well at the tricky Belle Isle course.

Welch most recently visited the event in 2012, where he finished sixth.

“It’s great to be back with GMG for Detroit,” stated Welch. “Our last race together at Long Beach definitely showed the potential of our program, hopefully this weekend will run with less yellows. Regardless, the team has done an excellent job getting me up to speed and I’m confident ahead of the weekend. I couldn’t be more thankful to everyone at Numerix for bringing me here, I’m sure we’ll show well.”

David and the team will once again carry the colors of Numerix, the market’s leading provider of risk analytics technology for the pricing, structuring, modeling and valuation any derivative instrument, or portfolio. Numerix risk solutions enable global financial institutions to understand performance, analyze and anticipate future derivatives risks with unparalleled speed and accuracy.

Practice for the event begins this Friday, May 29, with Race 10 taking place on May 30 at 9:50AM ET, with Sunday’s race taking place the next day at 12:10PM. MOST NOTABLY, Sunday’s race will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network at 12PM ET. The team will provide continuous updates via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Pirelli World Challenge: Top 10 in qualifying for Mike Skeen's Audi at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

By Tarek Ramchani

The Pirelli World Challenge has crossed the border this weekend, up north to Canada. The beautiful Canadian Tire Motorsport Park - former Mosport - is hosting rounds eight and nine of the 2015 season. Only three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars are taking part in the Canadian event.

The qualifying session held yesterday was a mixed one for the Audi Sport customer racing squad. A single Audi R8 LMS ultra qualified inside the Top 10.

The best ranked Audi driver was Mike Skeen with the #2 R8 LMS ultra qualified tenth overall. The 2014 series runner-up set a personal best of  1:15.968. The CRP Racing driver will be eager to bounce back on race day.

The remaining two Audi R8 LMS ultra cars who took part in the qualifying session were further behind, both competing within the GT-A class. JCR Motorsport team-owner and driver Jeff Courtney qualified twenty-sixth place with his #99 Audi R8 LMS ultra. Drew Regitz was twenty-eighth driving the #19 Audi R8 LMS ultra from Stephen Cameron Racing.

Pole position went to Johnny O'Connell with his factory #3 Cadillac ATS-VR GT3 from Cadillac Racing. Series points leader Olivier Beretta was second driving the #61 Ferrari 458 GT3 from R.Ferri Motorsport. Butch Leitzinger quailified his Dyson Racing run #20 Bentley Continental GT3 in third place.

The first Pirelli World Challenge race will be held on Saturday.

Pirelli World Challenge: Sofronas gains 14 positions en route to season-best finish at Long Beach

GMG Racing Press Release

Despite an incident packed event that only saw a limited number of laps under green flag conditions, James Sofronas and the entire Global Motorsports Group (GMG) organization took a season-best finish of seventh during yesterday’s 41st Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Gaining fourteen positions in only a handful of laps, not only was it Sofronas’ best finish of the year, but he would also receive the VP Racing Fuels "Hard Charger" award for passing more cars than anyone else. Adding to the success of the weekend, both David Welch and Brent Holden would also enjoy strong showings, with all three cars seeing the checkered flag and incurring virtually no damage.

“It was a chaotic race for sure, and one that we all hate to see for the fans,” stated Sofronas. “Despite all the yellows, however, all three of our cars came through it cleanly, and that is exactly what we need headed to Barber this weekend. The guys made a setup call for the race that was absolutely the right move, it was a good feeling to be able to make so many passes. We had a strong car and this provides excellent momentum as we head to one of our best tracks. It was also great to see David and Brent survive through all the carnage. They drove with incredible patience and that’s how we’re able to load three cars on our trailer in race-ready form. It’s very unfortunate just how many teams have extensive damage to repair before this coming event and in that sense we’re very fortunate.”

Following a disappointing qualifying effort that left the No. 14 Spyder / The Thermal Club / Mobil 1 Audi R8 LMS ultra mired in the 11th row, the team knew than an emphasis on passing would be key for their Sunday chances. Getting a great jump during Sunday’s standing start, the Villa Park, California resident was up several positions when the first of several caution flags flew before he’d even made Turn One. Pulling another great move during the race’s second restart, the No. 14 machine would find itself within sight of the top-10 before the race’s midway point, having only run three laps of green. With incident after incident continuing to slow the race, James knew that maximizing his restarts would be critical with the recurring theme of caution periods, and he did so brilliantly, eventually moving to seventh and never looking back as the race came to an end.

After a three-year absence from Pirelli World Challenge competition, David Welch in the No. 21 numerix Audi R8 LMS ultra would also enjoy a banner event, gaining sixteen spots en route to a 5th place finish in the GTA category. Welch, who last took to the series in Detroit 2012, drove a tactical event, knowing full well the potential for incidents. Finding himself in the chaotic middle of the pack, David kept remarkably patient, utilizing the restarts to full advantage and gaining with every green flag lap.

“I’m really happy we were able to keep the car clean,” stated Welch. “I couldn’t believe how long we were under yellow and with all the chaos around it just seemed to be endless. Knowing how this was going, I put a premium on just running clean, and it worked out exactly as I’d hoped. A fifth place finish is not a bad way to mark my return, and I look forward to my next race.”

Finally, also enjoying a top-10 in the GTA category would be local driver Brent Holden. Driving the No. 44 machine, Brent also took advantage of the attrition to gain ten spots on the day, ultimately finishing 10th. In addition, Holden also set some of the best lap times he’s ever run at the circuit, a testament to the team’s recent practice runs performed at The Thermal Club, near Palm Springs, as well as extensive data analysis.

“You hate to see this kind of race for the fans, but I’m happy that our car had a minimal amount of damage,” stated Holden. “It seemed like every time we went green there was another incident right around me and I’m thankful we were able to get through all of it. Everyone at GMG did their usual superb job of running through the data and getting me up to speed and all-in-all I was very happy with how we performed.”

In addition to the on-track action, GMG once again enjoyed their place front and center in the Long Beach Convention Center, with several cars and accessories on display. With the event welcoming tens of thousands of race fans, the Santa Ana-based team was happy to host local fans and enthusiasts, introducing the team’s many partners and tuning products to the public.

With no time to reflect, GMG and the rest of the Pirelli World Challenge is already en route to their next event, taking place at the scenic Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, where they will take to the track on Thursday. Race One will take place on Saturday, April 25, followed by a second round on Sunday, April 26. The team will provide updates and coverage throughout the weekend.

Pirelli World Challenge: James Sofronas, David Welch, Brent Holden highlight three-car home race for GMG at Long Beach‏

GMG Racing Press Release

SANTA ANA, Calif. (April 16, 2015)- As the flagship event of the Pirelli World Challenge, Global Motorsports Group (GMG) will head to this weekend’s 41st Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach with a mission to show well in front of their home crowd.

“Returning to Long Beach is always a great opportunity to showcase our team and product in front of a loyal, local customer base,” stated James Sofronas, team owner and driver of the No. 14 Spyder / The Thermal Club / Mobil 1 Audi R8 LMS ultra. “As our home race, we’ve always been fortunate enough to enjoy success here, not only by winning first with Porsche and then with Audi, but with a fantastic opportunity in the Long Beach Convention Center to promote our partners as well as our wide range of street tuning products.”

Located just 30 minutes north of the team’s Santa Ana headquarters, the historic 1.96-mile circuit, made up entirely of street roads in Long Beach’s noted Pike area, is heralded as one of the flagship events of North American road racing. Sharing the weekend with the Verizon IndyCar Series, the event is one of the most heavily attended on the calendar, and with a heritage unlike any other.

A two-time winner of the event, first in 2009 with Porsche followed by 2013 with Audi, Sofronas will once again take to the streets in pursuit of podium honors. Following a fairly quiet opening to his season, the Villa Park, California resident has shown outstanding consistency throughout 2015. Most recently, Sofronas took his best finish of the year during last month's fourth round in St. Petersburg, narrowly missing out on a top-five finish. With all but two of the GT category’s cars fitting the very popular European GT3 specifications, the series has recently undergone a significant increase in car count and popularity.

“It is incredibly competitive to say the least,” continued Sofronas. “It’s a testament to some of the great decisions that Scott Bove and everyone at the series has made, but it’s definitely making our job harder! With so many great cars, great teams and world-class drivers, this series is at another level… a podium with this field would be a great accomplishment!”

Returning after a three-year absence from the Pirelli World Challenge ranks, David Welch will return to the team in the second of three Audis. Driving the No. 21 Numerix Audi R8 LMS ultra, Welch will head to Long Beach with years of experience behind him, driving a number of vehicles including Porsche, Ferrari, and most recently in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo series.

“It’s great to be back with GMG, and what better place than Long Beach,” stated Welch. “I’ve always had a good experience with the team, and I’m extremely excited to get back behind the wheel. I can’t believe the last time I drove in the Pirelli World Challenge was 2012, and the series has changed significantly since then. The new GTA category is proving very competitive, I look forward to seeing how we can mix in.”

Finally, long-time veteran Brent Holden will also return in the No. 44 Audi. Competing in his sixth event, the Southern California resident will continue his long relationship with GMG, for which he has benefitted greatly from the team’s coaching, data, and engineering. Competing in the GTA category, Brent’s marked improvement in laptimes during last year’s race should foreshadow a strong 2015 event.

“It’s always great to come back to Long Beach,” stated Holden. “We were able to run very competitively with the Audi last year, and with a year’s worth of experience now, we should be really strong. James and everyone at GMG have done a great job providing me all of the tools I need, including a great test at The Thermal Club most recently, so we’re coming in with a lot of confidence.”

Practice for the event begins this Friday, April 17, with Sundays’ race starting at 4:30PM PT. Live coverage can be found at world-challengetv.com. Additionally, for those visiting the event, GMG will be prominently displayed in the event’s convention center, where we will be showcasing several of our vehicles and street tuning kits, as well as displays for many of our partners.

Pirelli World Challenge: Audi teams at St. Petersburg and race 1 podium for Skeen and CRP Racing

By Johan Laubscher

The Pirelli World Challenge moved to the streets of St. Petersburg for rounds three and four of the 2015 season. Six Audi R8 LMS ultra cars were entered by five different teams this weekend.

GMG Racing arrived with two Audi R8 LMS ultra entries: James Sofronas (#14 Audi – GT) and Brent Holden (#44 Audi – GTA). CRP Racing fielded its #2 Audi R8 LMS ultra with Mike Skeen (GT), Stephen Cameron Racing with the #19 Audi R8 LMS ultra of Drew Regitz (GTA), M1 Racing with the #23 Audi R8 LMS ultra bring driven by Walt Bowlin, and JCR Motorsports with the #99 Audi R8 LMS ultra of Jeff Courtney.

It was a wet qualifying session which was dominated by Ryan Eversly and his four-wheel-drive Acura. Mike Skeen was the highest placed Audi during qualifying, despite not getting a clear lap, he was able to qualify seventh. James Sofronas qualified twentieth, ahead of Drew Regitz in twenty-seventh, Jeff Courtney in twenty-eighth and Walt Bowlin in thirty-second.

Race one was held on a sunny Saturday and Ryan Eversly won from pole position, defending from Ryan Dalziel in his Porsche. The start of the race unfortunately saw Drew Regitz involved in an incident with stalled vehicles on the front straight, ending his and a number of competitors’ race. Mike Skeen had a good start and continued to move up through the field, ultimately finishing third under caution.

James Sofronas also moved forward during the race and finished thirteenth. Jeff Courtney progressed up to twenty-first finishing position, followed by Walt Bowlin in twenty-seventh. Brent Holden did not start the race.

The second and final race was held on Sunday. Mike Skeen was the highest Audi on the grid. The first lap saw a number of different incidents which resulted in a caution period that lasted for over half of the race duration. Unfortunately the #23 Audi R8 LMS ultra of Walt Bowlin was involved in one of the opening lap incidents and retired with damage, luckily Bowlin was unharmed.

A twenty-minute sprint began when the race went green. Mike Skeen moved up to fourth place and held that position until he was passed by Ryan Dalziel and spun around by Davison in the Nissan.

James Sofronas finished as the highest placed Audi in eighth, ahead of Jeff Courtney in nineteenth, Skeen in twenty-eighth and Drew Regitz in thirty-second.

The weekend’s results can be seen HERE.

The Pirelli World Challenge will now be heading to Long Beach from 17-19 April.

Pirelli World Challange: Udell, GMG open season strong with podium. Snow takes top Audi honors

GMG Racing Press Release

In his first-ever race with the famed Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Global Motorsports Group’s (GMG) Alec Udell drove a masterful event to take podium honors at his home track during today’s Grand Prix of Texas, the first round of the Pirelli World Challenge.

“A podium finish definitely meets our expectations,” stated the 19-year-old. “With a new category you never know what to expect, but the team did an excellent job preparing for it and we arrived feeling very confident. Beyond the podium, championship points are always on our minds, so starting off strong is critical. Hopefully we can carry that momentum into tomorrow and leave the weekend in a great position.”

Udell, a Texas native, came in to the series’ all-new GT Cup category with a championship focus in mind. As a spec category for the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 991, Alec was able to qualify the No. 17 machine for the front row during this morning’s qualifying session knowing that patience and consistency would be key for the 50-minute race.

Running simultaneously with the GT and GTA categories, Udell’s “front row” position would still require competing against a variety of different categories, and Alec’s prior experience in the series’ GTS category proved fruitful as he managed to avoid incident. Holding second throughout much of his run, a late race combination of traffic and fading tires would ultimately give up one position, settling for third place honors.

Taking the top spot for GMG in the headlining GT category would be another 19-year-old, Madison Snow. Driving the No. 21 Santa Cruz Bicycles / UIS Audi R8 LMS ultra, the Utah native would take the green light from the fourth row having never raced in Audi machinery. Making a clean start, the multi-time TUDOR podium winner held position throughout the opening laps, advancing to sixth and with an eye toward top-five as the laps continued.

With limited experience in the series, the 2013 IMSA GT3 Cup Champion didn’t put a foot wrong as the event continued on, his main challenge proving to be fading handling, eventually falling back to ninth by time the checkered flag fell. Additionally, Madison would end the race as the top finisher in Audi machinery.

“Overall I think we showed great potential, and we’ve set ourselves up well for tomorrow,” stated Snow. “As the race kept on we were really hoping for a top-five, but it just wasn’t in the cards. More importantly, we learned a lot today and I think we’ll be able to make some good adjustments for tomorrow’s race.”

Also competing in the premier GT category was GMG team owner James Sofronas. With over 15 years in the series, the veteran took the green flag in his No. 14 The Thermal Club / Spyder / Mobil 1 Audi R8 LMS ultra with patience, driving without incident to quietly close in on a top-ten, ultimately taking 13th.

“This year all of our attention is on developing our drivers and giving them the tools they need to succeed, so I’m happy to see Alec and Madison run so well,” stated Sofronas. “This series has grown so fast and become so competitive that fighting for a top-ten has become incredibly challenging, but that’s a great testament to the championship. I’m happy to see Alec run so well, and I know Madison will be even stronger tomorrow. With Alex taking the finish line, all four of our cars crossed the line unscathed and that puts us in great shape for Round Two.”

Finally, Alex Welch would finish today’s race with an 11th place ranking in the series’ GTA category. Competing against a record number of entries, the Colorado resident would exercise caution throughout his run, eventually seeing the finish without a scratch on the car.

With all four cars finishing cleanly, the team will be able to focus all attention on final preparations and setup for tomorrow’s second round, taking place at 2:25PM ET and broadcast live on world-challengetv.com.

Pirelli World Challenge: Unlucky race 1 for the Audi teams at COTA

By Tarek Ramchani

The Circuit of the Americas hosted a thrilling Pirelli World Challenge season opener. An action packed Race 1 with great battles on track for overall win and class honors.

Seven Audi R8 LMS ultra cars took part in the 50-minute sprint race. After 23 laps, only one Audi R8 LMS ultra managed to enter the Top 10. Madison Snow driving his #21 Audi ended in a strong ninth overall, not bad for a debut with GMG Racing in the demanding PWC series.

GMG Racing team owner James Sofronas battled well in the middle of the GT pack. The driver of the #14 R8 LMS ultra ended in thirtneeth place overall.

Mike Skeen who qualified well taking a very strong fifth place, was penalized. The CRP Racing Audi driver had to start from the rear. Mike Skeen bounced back well and took sixteenth place.

Alex Welch with the #76 Audi from GMG Racing was twenty-fourth. Drew Regitz driving the #19 R8 LMS ultra was thirty-second.

Bad luck hit the remaining two Audis, both forced to retire very early into the race with technical issues. First it was Guy Cosmo who retired in the second lap with his #23 R8 LMS ultra. A lap later it was the turn of Jeff Courtney and his #99 Audi to retire.

Overall race victory went to Ferrari factory driver Oliver Beretta with the #61 Ferrari 458 GT3. Ryan Dalziel took second place driving the #31 Porsche 997 GT3-R. Johnny O'Connell gave Cadillac a strong debut with a podium behind the wheel of the brand new Cadillac ATS-VR GT3.

Pirelli World Challenge race 1 results are here.

The second race is set for Saturday afternoon at the beautiful COTA circuit. We wish the best of luck to all Audi teams and drivers.

Pirelli World Challenge: Madison Snow to join GMG for Pirelli World Challenge opener

GMG Racing Press Release

Joining the team for this weekend’s season-opening round of the Pirelli World Challenge at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, Global Motorsport Group (GMG) is proud to announce the addition of 19-year-old standout Madison Snow to the lineup.

“I couldn’t be happier to bring Madison into our program,” stated GMG team owner and co-driver James Sofronas. “At a very young age, Madison has been extremely impressive at the top levels of our sport, and he should acclimate well to our way of working. Even though he’s become something of a Porsche specialist, I’m very confident he’ll be able to jump right into our Audi and the series’ sprint format and immediately contend. We make a very conscious effort to arm our drivers with a comprehensive amount of data, setup information, and more so that they can jump right in and be comfortable.”

Hailing from Lehi, Utah, Madison Snow has been a standout within the IMSA ranks. Making his first full-season effort last year in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Madison was an instant contender in the new series. Opening his championship effort with a podium at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, followed by additional podiums at Road America and the season-ending Petit Le Mans, Snow managed a seventh place ranking in the standings in his first season. In 2013, the then 17-year-old took an impressive seven victories en route to a championship in the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge.

Having previously competed in two rounds of Pirelli World Challenge competition, Snow will make his Audi debut in the No. 21 Santa Cruz Bicycles / UIS Audi R8 LMS ultra, joining a four-car effort campaigned by GMG. With teammates Alec Udell, Alex Welch and James Sofronas, Snow’s first race with both the series and marque will be aided by the team’s vast experience. Taking advantage of the team’s extensive collection of data and setup history with the Audi, compounded by two decades of history in the series, Madison will return to the circuit where he narrowly missed the podium during the 2014 TUDOR race.

“I’m really looking forward to the whole event this weekend,” stated Snow. “The Pirelli World Challenge has a lot of momentum behind it, and it is great to return. The sprint format is nothing new to me from my experience in the GT3 Cup and Prototype Lites, but obviously the level of competition and quality of teams will make it a real challenge. The Audi R8 LMS ultra has always been a tough car to compete against in other series, so it should be an interesting experience to finally get behind the wheel of one. GMG is one of the most experienced teams in the paddock so I’m confident I’ll have plenty of data to work from. Thanks to everyone at the team and especially Santa Cruz Bicycles for making this opportunity possible.”

The No. 21 will feature sponsorship from Santa Cruz Bicycles and Universal Industrial Sales, Inc. (UIS). With dealerships around the world, Santa Cruz Bicycles is recognized as one of the premier mountain bike manufacturers. Founded in 1993 in Santa Cruz, California, the company has focused on developing state-of-the-art technology behind their bicycles, currently manufacturing 12 models.
