VLN: Phoenix Racing and TÜV Rheinland continue partnership in VLN and Nürburgring 24 Hours

Phoenix Racing Press Release

Phoenix Racing and TÜV Rheinland were able to crown their official partnership right in the first year. With the Audi R8 LMS ultra sporting the distinctive TÜV Rheinland logo Ernst Moser’s motorsport team with drivers Christopher Haase, Christian Mamerow, René Rast and Markus Winkelhock won the ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race Nürburgring. The continuation of the successful partnership between TÜV Rheinland and Phoenix Racing was announced on Friday, 27 March, at a press conference at the Nürburgring that was attended by Dr Michael Fübi, Chairman of the Board of Management of TÜV Rheinland AG, as well.

“TÜV Rheinland and Phoenix Racing both strive for a maximum of safety, quality and precision, as well sharing a passion for motorsport,” Ernst Moser, Team Director of Phoenix Racing, commented.

“This joint success in the Nürburgring 24 Hours has motivated and inspired us, but it is more than the sporting success on the race track that underpins this partnership,” said Prof Dr-Ing Jürgen Brauckmann, Management Board Member Mobility TÜV Rheinland. “For over 40 years TÜV has been accompanying technological innovations with the aim of continually improving quality and safety. Motorsport at the Nürburgring, and this includes our commitment with Ernst Moser and his team as well, offers us an ideal platform for the dialogue with industry and our clientele.”

Frank Stippler, who like last year’s 24-hour race winner Christian Mamerow is part of the Phoenix line-up of regular drivers on the Nordschleife, as brand ambassador continues to be an integral component of the motorsport commitment of the independent testing services provider. Prof Dr-Ing Jürgen Brauckmann: “Frank Stippler is not only a successful racing driver but also an outstanding brand ambassador for us, who ideally communicates the synergy between motorsport and TÜV Rheinland.”

Phoenix Racing based in Meuspath at the Nürburgring and TÜV Rheinland are primarily focused on the 43rd ADAC Zurich 24-Hour Race Nürburgring to be held from 14 to 17 May that Phoenix has previously won a total of four times. The squad of Team Director Ernst Moser and GT Team Manager Bernhard Demmer will be participating in the iconic endurance race in the Eifel with two next-generation Audi R8 LMS cars. In addition, Phoenix Racing, which competes in the two Blancpain GTSeries and as Audi Sport Team Phoenix in the DTM as well, will be contesting all ten races of the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring. The VLN opening race is held on Saturday (28 March) and, at the same time, marks the racing debut of the new Audi R8 LMS that is driven on the legendary Nordschleife by Mike Rockenfeller, Christopher Haase, Frank Stippler and Marc Basseng.

They were behind the wheel of an Audi race experience (TKL Motorsport) Audi R8 LMS ultra (pictured below).

Editor's note (Johan Laubscher): Audi race experience will be running this Audi R8 LMS ultra entry at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. It will not be run by Phoenix Racing, as was previously stated by myself on the Audi Motorsport Blog. Audi before race debut of the Audi R8 LMS and first 24-hour races of the GT season

Audi Press Release

  • First fielding of GT3 race car in VLN opener
  • Phoenix Racing and Belgian Audi Club Team WRT are race teams
  • Strong driver line-up for the 24-hour races at the Nürburgring and at Spa
Ingolstadt, March 23, 2015 – On March 28, the new Audi R8 LMS will be facing its baptism of fire in the VLN Endurance Championship Nürburgring. Seven weeks later, one of Germany’s major races will follow, with four new R8 LMS cars battling for success in the Nürburgring 24 Hours on May 16 and 17. On July 25 and 26, the world’s major GT3 race, the Spa 24 Hours, will be held. On board: four driver squads with Le Mans winners, an FIA WEC World Champion and Audi Champions from DTM and GT racing.

The Audi R8 LMS was in the spotlight at the Geneva Motor Show just recently, at the beginning of the month, and about three weeks later it has to prove itself for the first time in the ‘Green Hell’ of the Nürburgring. The Audi R8 LMS will be competing there on the last weekend in March. In the opening race of the VLN Endurance Championship, the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT and Team Phoenix Racing will each be fielding one of the brand new GT3 race cars. Both teams have excellent references. The Belgian team of Vincent Vosse decided the Spa 24 Hours in its favor last year, while Ernst Moser’s Phoenix squad based in the Eifel won the endurance race on its doorstep.

“Our new Audi R8 LMS is ready for a rigorous testing program in racing conditions,” says Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. “We selected the two toughest 24-hour races in Europe that GT3 cars are permitted to compete in. In Phoenix Racing and the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT we’ve got two teams that have been spoiled by success at our side. Towards the end of the year we’re going to deliver a powerful new race car to our customers.”

Successful Audi race drivers from various motorsport series are going to take turns at the wheel of the Audi R8 LMS in the events at the Nürburgring and at Spa. The former DTM Champion Mike Rockenfeller and his fellow Audi driver Nico Müller, the Le Mans winners Marcel Fässler and Stéphane Ortelli, WEC driver René Rast, last year’s winners at the Nürburgring and at Spa, plus many other top-caliber GT drivers are completing the line-up of both teams.

In addition, the new Audi R8 LMS will be competing in selected other races in the 2015 season, such as the second VLN race on April 25 and individual rounds of the Blancpain Endurance Series.

Nürburgring 24 Hours: Audi China team to compete at the Nürburgring 24h in 2015

Audi R8 LMS Cup Press Release

• Driver team to be recruited from the Asia-based Audi R8 LMS Cup
• Program includes tests and preparation races in the "Green Hell"
• Audi Sport customer racing Asia offers international platform for Asian drivers

Beijing, October 18, 2014 – Audi Sport customer racing Asia will compete at the 2015 Nürburgring 24 hours endurance race with a driver team from the Audi R8 LMS Cup, the brand's Asia-based GT series.

"For the first time, we join the world's leading touring car endurance race with our own team of Audi R8 LMS Cup drivers. With the Nürburgring 24h entry, Audi further broadens its platform for Asian drivers to gain international exposure and experience", commented Rene Koneberg, Director of Audi Sport customer racing Asia.

The first candidates have already started testing on the demanding "Green Hell" of the track's famous north loop, the Nordschleife. On October 11, drivers "Franky" Cheng Congfu (China), Marchy Lee (Hong Kong) and Shaun Thong (Hong Kong) raced in Round 9 of the Nürburgring's 2014 VLN Endurance Series and finished 18th out of over 200 entries. Thong has just joined the new Young Driver Development Program of Audi in Asia. "At the VLN race, our Asian drivers have already shown their ability to be competitive on this highly demanding circuit", said Koneberg.

The final driver team for the Nürburgring 24h on May 14-17 2015 will be decided after more rounds of testing. The Nürburgring is located in Nürburg, in the west of Germany. The complete circuit is 25.9km long and features 170 turns. Motorsport legend Jackie Stewart famously called it the “Green Hell”, because of the green scenery surrounding the highly technical track. Audi won the Nürburgring 24h twice in 2012 and 2014.

Q&A: Interview with Rahel Frey - Audi GT factory driver

Rahel Frey is racing with Audi since 2011. First in the German DTM touring car series for two years and since 2013 the Swiss driver switched to GT racing with competing in various events around the world from German ADAC GT Masters to the Asian based Audi R8 LMS Cup.

Our friend Jean-Baptiste Lassaux at IG Autorennsport had a a very interesting interview with Rahel Frey at the Nürburgring about her 2014 season.

1/ First, a look back to the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Tell us more about your race with the Audi race experience in the Green Hell?

My summary of the 2014 24h race at the Nürburgring is really positive. Our priority was to finish the race, what we did on P22. Furthermore all four drivers on the car (including myself) could improve our personal laptimes compared to last year or compared to former races which was for my the most important. Incidents can always happen in a 24h race and they did unfortunately for us! But our team and especially our mecanics mad a fantastic job to fix this incidents in no time - therefore big thanks once again!

2/ Now, your next race is in Fuji in the Audi R8 LMS Cup. This will be your first time there, so  how do you learn the track before the race weekend?

As usual when I dont know a racetrack, I will watch onboard videos and studying important datas I got from the team. I will be prepared for it.

3/ What are your targets this year in the Audi R8 LMS Cup?

My target is to win the Audi R8 LMS Cup 2014. Right now I'm 10 point behind the leader - a cap which I can still close when I'm clever on driving and on strategy.

Taking care about the tyres is an important point for but as well being clever on using the new "push-to-pass" system which gets us 50hp more when we press the special button for it. Furthermore it's performance balance we get for the first three places (60kg for P1, 40kg for P2 and 20kg for P3) can take influence on the results.

4/ Let's talk about your season in ADAC GT Masters. What do you think about your season so far in the German series?

We had a good start into the new season with immediately scoring points in both races at Oschersleben. Afterwards we made some mistakes where we had to pay for not being in the position for fighting for point anymore. But we learn from every mistakes we do and for sure we will get back stronger again.

5 / What are you expecting in the second half of the season?

As I just mentioned, we will get back stronger and aiming again for more points. Therefore each race track is a new challenge. For sure sometimes one race track fits better for the driver another race track fits best for the car. But in my opinion the BOP 2014 is more equal as last year!

6 / After your two years in the DTM, you switched to GT racing with Audi. Tell us more about what you have learnt traveling and discovring many prestigious tracks and events around the world?

Always when traveling the world you have to find your way through! I got already a lot of experience with traveling around the world for racing and I wont miss any. Some were tough, some were really nice but they all formed my personality like I am today. And for sure each race driver has a list with races or race tracks he likes to drive in or on. I have my list too, some of these tracks were on - some are still on.

7 / Any racing track or series you want to compete in?

Taking every challenge I get! But I would like to drive once in America maybe in the oval with a Nascar.
