Pirelli World Challenge: North America's version of GT3 racing

By Tarek Ramchani

The North American based Pirelli World Challenge is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) sanctioned series is a successful mix of Grand Touring and Touring Car classes.

The GT class is becoming even more aligned with the very popular GT3 concept during 2014. The SCCA recently welcomed full FIA GT3 specification cars, including the Audi R8 LMS ultra. Teams with FIA GT3 cars will have to fight against two proper SCCA factory programs from Cadillac and new comers from Acura HPD.

Races are done in true sprint style with no mandatory pit stops and driver changes. This results in giving the fans great races and battles on track, as seen in 2013. Audi and Cadillac battled all season long last year until the last race on the Streets of Houston, with Cadillac's Johnny O'Connel taking the title in the end. Fans can easily follow the action with quality online Live Stream coverage, provided by the series organisers.

The Audi Sport customer racing squad will once again be very well represented. Multiple Audi R8 LMS and ultra cars will take part in the 2014 season. The cars will come from GMG Racing, DragonSpeed and JCR (Jeff Courtney Racing). Their target is simple, to take the Audi brand's first GT title since 2004, back during the days of the Audi RS 6 Competition from Champion Racing.

The Pirelli World Challenge season opener is set at St. Petersburg in March.
