GT Cup: United Autosports to defend title in 2015 GT Cup Championship

United Autosports Press Release

  •     United Autosports return to championship to defend title
  •     Full season of racing for Phil Burgan for first time in eight years
  •     First time Audi R8 LMS ultra competes in a full season of GT Cup
United Autosports will return to the GT Cup in 2015 as defending champions with Phil Burgan in the Audi R8 LMS ultra.

The team will return to the series to defend the title they won during the final round of the 2014 championship at Oulton Park last month.

Phil Burgan joins the team for a full season after competing at Oulton Park in the Audi where he finished on the podium in his first race in more than eight years. Phil is the founder and CEO of Maria Mallaband Care Group Ltd, one of the biggest care home providers in the UK. He raced in the UK Ferrari Championship in 1996 before going on to compete in the European Ferrari Challenge from 1997 to 1999. He also competed in the Trofeo Masterati in 2006 before retiring from racing and setting up the Phil Burgan Race Academy that supports a new generation of British racers.

Next year will also mark the first time the Audi R8 LMS ultra will compete in a full season of the GT Cup championship.

Phil Burgan, Driver, United Autosports:

“I’m really looking forward to a full season of GT3 racing in 2015 with the great team at United Autosports. After a long layoff from racing it has been a bit of a baptism of fire getting up to speed with the Audi in the short amount of track time spent so far. However the ingredients are all there to get the best out of the car and myself going forwards.”

Zak Brown, Team Owner and Chairman, United Autosports:

“I’m thrilled the team is entering the GT Cup again. It will be great for the team to return to the series and defend their championship. The Audi is a great car and Phil did a really good job at Oulton Park so I’m confident he will be challenging for wins and the title.”

Richard Dean, Team Owner and Managing Director, United Autosports:

“It’s great to have Phil back with the team for 2015. He did a great job at Oulton Park, finishing on the podium during his first time out racing the Audi. The car is much different to what he is used to but with a decent amount of track time under his belt, I have no doubt he will be challenging for wins from the first round.”

GT Cup: United Autosports win 2014 GT Cup Championship

United Autosports Press Release

United Autosports win GT Cup championship at Oulton Park
Race one win for Jim Geddie clinches title
Phil Burgan finishes on podium in first race in Audi R8 LMS ultra

United Autosports have won the GT Cup championship at the final round at Oulton Park (Saturday 25th October)

Jim Geddie started the first race of the day on pole position and brought the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 home in first place, clinching the championship for the team. After being passed by Richard Chamberlain before the start line, a crash at the first corner knocked Chamberlain out of the race and Jim back into the lead. He briefly slipped to second behind the Porsche of Will Plant when the safety car was called out, but he regained the lead on the race restart, a lead which grew by a second and a half each lap. Recording fastest lap after fastest lap, Jim and the team scored their second championship win together in as many years.

Phil Burgan enjoyed success in the first race. After qualifying in 12th, he brought the Audi R8 LMS ultra home in sixth, third in class after some great battles thoughout the 20-minute race.

Jim started the second race in second and Phil in seventh. Jim got the jump on the pole sitter Marcus Clutton heading into the first corner, but the race was red flagged when a start line incident involving seven cars, one of which was bystander Phil in the Audi, brought the race to a stop. At the restart, Jim was on the tail of Clutton in first, but after a strong battle in the 15-minute race, brought the McLaren home in second. Unfortunately, Phil’s race ended in the first corner incident.

Over the course of the year, Jim has scored five wins and 18 podiums from 20 races.

Jim Geddie, Driver, United Autosports:

“It’s been a good year, and weekend too. I was happy with pole in qualifying and the first race was good, taking the win and championship win. The second race was mixed. I took the lead at the first corner but then it was red flagged which was unfortunate. I kept with him though and it was a good battle but there was no point risking damage. We won the championship so I’m happy with that.”

Phil Burgan, Driver, United Autosports:

“It’s been a real up and down weekend. It was very difficult in the mixed conditions for me to get the best out of the car and learn what the car will do as I’m not used to a car that has so many electrical capabilities that the Audi does. In the dry we were very quick. The first race was good. I went from 12th to sixth, which was a good recovery. I was looking forward to the second race but unfortunately got thumped out before we even got to the first corner. I’ve learnt a huge amount and enjoyed the first race so that a positive result from the weekend.”

Richard Dean, Team Owner and Managing Director, United Autosports:

“It was good to see Phil Burgan make his debut with us and in the GT Cup series and to get a podium first time out. He was unlucky in race two with the start line incident but that’s racing. He showed he’s definitely got the pace in race one. A race win and championship win for Jim, what more can you say? He’s really come on and is without a doubt a worthy champion. And it’s a second championship for the team, I’m really pleased for all of them too.”

British GT: John McCullagh joins Bell in United Autosports Audi for Brands Hatch

United Autosports Press Release

United Autosports regular Matt Bell is joined by reigning Porsche Club GB Champion John McCullagh for the penultimate round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship staged at Brands Hatch on Sunday (31 Aug).

Matt finished sixth in last year’s corresponding race with Mark Patterson, the pair failing to win the 2013 BGT title by just two points, and is targeting a top-six repeat result with “newcomer” McCullagh.

Ex-rally driver McCullagh, an engineer who has been a director for 20 years with the MMC Engineering Group based on Teesside, recorded 17 class poles, 14 class wins and 14 class fastest laps in last year’s Porsche Club GB Championship.

The two-hour event marks McCullagh’s maiden race for United Autosports, his first in an Audi R8 LMS, first GT3 class race and first on the Brands 2.433 mile Grand Prix circuit.

#23 Henderson – Audi R8 LMS ultra

Matt Bell (GB). Age: 25. Born: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne & Wear, England. Lives: Barningham nr Richmond, North Yorkshire, England.
“Brands Hatch is one of Britain’s most iconic circuits so I always enjoy going back there. It presents similar challenges to Oulton Park – it’s bumpy and narrow with lots of elevation changes so there’s pressure to get the set-up right and get up the front in qualifying otherwise it means a difficult race.

“It would be very nice and quite rare this year, if the Audi is not assaulted on-track during the race – a ‘clean’ race would make a very welcome change. It will be John’s first foray into GT3 so the main objective will be to get him comfortable and up to speed in practice. He’s tested well in the Audi and so hopefully it will come as naturally to him as his racing a Porsche which he’s done successfully for a number of years and we’ll have a good weekend.”

John McCullagh (GB). Age: 50. Born: Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Lives: Northallerton, North Yorkshire

“I’m looking forward to making my British GT Championship debut, having my first race with United Autosports, with Matt, in an Audi and on the Brands GP track. I’ve raced on the Brands Indy circuit a number of times with success but can’t wait to get out onto the GP track.

“I tested the R8 LMS for the first time this month at Silverstone and thoroughly enjoyed myself finding the Audi a pleasure to drive. It’s extremely well balanced, puts the power down well and is awesome under braking. Matt and I clocked up almost 200 miles and each mile passed off without any dramas.

“I rallied between 1986-91 competing in the Vauxhall Nova Challenge before competing in the British National and British Open championships. I decided to try my hand at circuit racing in 2011, having a couple of outings in the Porsche GB Club Championship, and am now in my third season in that series having won it last year driving a Porsche 968.

“Matt is a family friend and gave me some coaching in 2012 while I’ve followed the fortunes of him in BGT with the United Autosports team in recent years and I’m looking forward to working with Richard and his team.”

Richard Dean, Team Owner and Managing Director, United Autosports:
“We make our way to Brands Hatch with the hope of getting a decent result after a mixed weekend at Spa last month. We also welcome John McCullagh to the team for the two-hour race. He has tested the Audi a couple of times since he agreed to join us but this will be the first time he is in a race situation with the R8. We are confident John and Matt will make a good partnership for the Brands weekend.”
