Audi R8 LMS ultra jumps at speed as Sainz and Molina set records in Spain

By Johan Laubscher

A special event was held by Red Bull in Spain. A fact that very few know about is that the second oldest race circuit in Europe is hidden in the Spanish country side. Sitges Terramar is Europe’s second oldest race circuit, second only to Brooklands in England.

Terramar is an appropriate name as it translates to earth sea, a good description of this circuit which is absolutely massive. It is a banked circuit with banking being described as reaching angles of up to 90 degrees. A demanding circuit which was built in 1923. The track record has stood since 1923 when it took Louis Zborowski Miller 45.8 seconds to complete a lap at an average speed of 157.2 km/h. The track has been closed for many decades and the area is currently used as a Chicken farm.

In May 2012 Red Bull Spain and Audi set out to conquer this legendary race track and chase after the record. Nature has taken its toll on the circuit with grass, ruts and dust covering the surface. The circuit in its current state is more suited to a rally car than the proposed beautiful Red Bull liveried Audi R8 LMS ultra.

However Carlos Sainz and Miguel Molina both raced the car on the track at high speed. The car jumped many times a lap, which made for great filming. At the end of the day Carlos Sainz had set the fastest time. A brand new lap record of 42.6 seconds.

Red Bull Spain has produced this brilliant eight minute documentary from this event. As you can see from the screenshots this video is well worth the watch. The racing footage starts at 4:14 in the video, turn up your speakers, this is good one, enjoy:
