Blancpain Endurance Series: Bad weekend for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT at Paul Ricard 6-hour race

Belgian Audi Club Press Release

The Belgian Audi Club Team WRT lived a difficult and frustrating weekend at the Paul Ricard, which this year hosted the 6-hour race of the Blancpain Endurance Series. The circuit in Southern France has never been the most favorable to the Audis, but both the new R8 LMS and the R8 LMS ultra were clearly out-paced this time. A string of issues, mostly punctures and incidents but also a gearbox problem on car #1, further hit the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT cars, two of which (Rast-Rockenfeller-Vanthoor and Vernay-Frijns-Müller) finished the race but out of the points, while Richelmi-Stippler-Ortelli were stopped few minutes from the end. The only satisfaction came from the fourth car (under WRT banner) of Bottemanne-Koebolt-Schothorst, who took 8th in Pro-Am. These results brought to losing the provisional leadership in the points standings, although the situation remains extremely close ahead of the most important race of the season, the Total 24 Hours of Spa.

Belgian Audi Club Team WRT team principal Vincent Vosse could not hide his disappointment following the race: “It has clearly been a bad weekend: no points, quite some damage, many punctures and even a mechanic slightly injured during a pit stop. It’s certainly not what we sought prior to Spa, but the most worrying is that the performance wasn’t there. We still have to analyze thoroughly the data, but they show we were off-pace everywhere and none of our cars was in the top 15 of fastest cars during the race. This said, we are not going to be broken by a bad weekend. On the contrary, we are going back to work with even greater determination, as we always do when things get tougher!”

As expected, the Paul Ricard, with its long straights, proved challenging for the Audis R8 since first practice. The Belgian Audi Club Team WRT cars managed to reduce the gaps in qualifying, but that didn’t yield great positions on the grid, with Vanthoor on car #1 posting 12th-fastest in Pro Cup, Ortelli in car #3 taking P25 and Vernay in car #2 P27.

It took two formation laps for the 60 car-strong field to line up correctly for the start. The initial phases, despite a brief safety-car period prompted by an accident involving three of the front-runners, looked extremely promising for car #1, as René Rast had climbed up to 7th overall at the half-hour mark. Forty-five minutes into the race, Rast went into the pits for what seemed an early first pit stop, but unfortunately, there was more trouble: a gearbox problem that required reparation, losing 5 laps. The car rejoined the race in P53 overall and since there, its race was a restless charge to try to regain the lost ground, with Rast, Rockenfeller and Vanthoor making their utmost and eventually finishing 14th among Pro Cup cars.

Car #2 had its share of trouble as well: Vernay had taken the start and climbed positions, a job that Frijns continued later making it up to P8. The progression was abruptly stopped when the Dutchman got in contact with the Phoenix Audi then driven by Winkelhock, two hours and 15 minutes from the end. Repairs costed a couple of laps and a subsequent drive-through that even Winkelhock deemed unjustified. The car rejoined in P38 and ran most of the final part together with car #1 to take a final P15 in Pro Cup.

Car #3 of Richelmi-Stippler-Ortelli (in that driving sequence) seemed the one having the clearer race, with no major hiccups and a constant albeit less spectacular progression, entering the top ten overall shortly after four hours. Unfortunately, its efforts were made useless twenty minutes from the end, when it was 7th in the Pro Cup, when it suffered a puncture and did not restart from the pits.

It was instead a good race for the three young drivers of the Team WRT-entered car #4, with Bottemanne-Koebolt-Schothorst taking a final 8th in Pro-Am after qualifying 27th overall and having been as high as 4th in the race, suffering a puncture in the final hours.

Time now for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT to prepare for the most important race of the year, the Total 24 Hours of Spa, scheduled as usual at the end of July. Test day for the big enduro in the Ardennes is to take already next week on Wednesday 24th June. Next racing appointment will though be the fourth round of the Blancpain Sprint Series, in Moscow on 3-4 July. The race, initially scheduled on the downtown street circuit, is now confirmed on Moscow Raceway.

Blancpain Endurance Series: Belgian Audi Club Team WRT heading to Silverstone

Belgian Audi Club Press Release

The Blancpain Endurance Series is back with the second round of the season and yet another rendez-vous among the most traditional: Silverstone. In the fast and legendary Northamptonshire track, the Belgian Audi Club will try to keep the advantage in the Pro Cup standings, both Drivers’ and Teams’, resulting from the class top honours collected in the season-opener at Monza. The team will arrive in England following an epic triumph last weekend at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, as one of the new R8 LMS ran by the Belgian squad on behalf of Audi Sport conquered the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, arguably the thoughest endurance race for GTs, with Laurens Vanthoor, Edward Sandström, Nico Müller and Christopher Mies at the wheel. It is an unforgettable first win on the “Green Hell” for the squad and one that left everybody quite pleased. At Silverstone, the Belgian Audi Club will race in its usual 3-Audi R8 LMS ultra configuration, with a fourth car entered under the Team WRT banner.

Team Principal Vincent Vosse, despite the cold he contracted in the long and chilly weekend at the Nürburgring, is a happy man: “Conquering the Nürburgring 24 Hours with the new car was really great”, he reckons, “It’s a nice one, that will stick out in our roll of honour and makes us proud, because it is not the ground that we know the best and it is probably the toughest race of all.” This being said, the team’s focus is already entirely on Silverstone. “Now comes another challenging one”, says Vosse, “as we will be faced with very strong opposition, and an all-time record entry for the Blancpain Endurance Series. Still, Silverstone should be more favourable to us than Monza and we will try to do as well as we can. We have had an excellent start of the season, basically winning at every weekend so far, and we will try to keep both the momentum and first spot in both the Endurance and overall standings.”

Car #1 of the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT will be entrusted, as customary, to Laurens Vanthoor, Robin Frijns and Jean-Karl Vernay, with the young Belgian sporting his new status of ‘Ringmeister’. “The Nürburgring will be an unforgettable moment, it is such a difficult race”, commented the young Belgian, “Our objective was to go through the night without trouble and then charge. It has been a real sprint race, but the new Audi R8 proved perfect and the team did a wonderful job.”

There was little rest for Laurens, as on Monday he was at Spa testing the LMP2 car he will drive in his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans! But now all his attention is on Silverstone: “It will be a big battle, on one of the fastest tracks of the season, but I enjoy the prospect and we are determined to keep the leadership.”

Car #3 will see Stéphane Richelmi joining Frank Stippler and Stéphane Ortelli, while a third car (#2) will be entered in the Pro-Am Cup for local hero James Nash and French GT Tour regulars Philippe Gaillard and David Hallyday. The latter is no new face to the team as he raced two seasons in French GT with Team WRT. An additional car in the Pro-Am Cup is under the Team WRT banner for the trio of ‘youngsters’ which debuted in Monza: Bottemanne-Koebolt-Schothorst.

The Silverstone enduro will follow the usual Blancpain Endurance Series format, with track activity over only the weekend days and the 3-hour race kicking-off at 2:45 pm (UK time) on Sunday.

Blancpain Endurance Series: Brilliant podium for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT at Monza

Belgian Audi Club Press Release

It was a great start of the season in the Blancpain Endurance Series too for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, although the ultra-fast track of Monza is certainly not the most favorable circuit to the Audis R8 LMS ultra and despite the 59-car strong field. Laurens Vanthoor and his new team mates Robin Frijns and Jean-Karl Vernay took an excellent third overall (and 2nd in the Pro Cup) after a solid and consistent race. The result became a 2nd overall (and first in the Pro Cup) after the winning Lamborghini was disqualified. The good result was rounded by the 5th position (3rd in the Pro Cup) of the brand new Audi R8 LMS, driven by Frank Stippler-Stéphane Ortelli-Nico Müller on its very racing debut on the international scene. The third trio (Richelmi-van der Linde-Mies) was less lucky, as they had to retire mid-race with a brakes issue.

Belgian Audi Club Team WRT team principal Vincent Vosse was satisfied and relieved at the end of the day: “We leave Monza with heavy points, which was the objective, and a podium finish, which is unexpected, as Monza is notoriously one of the most difficult tracks for us”, he reckoned. “We can be satisfied and there was little more we could do against cars much faster on the long straights. Everybody did an excellent job and we are very happy also of the good result of the new R8 LMS. It had a number of teething little problems, also during pit stops, as it could be anticipated, but it is an encouraging debut and we collected very useful data upon which we will base the development work in the weeks and months ahead”.

Free practice and qualifying ran smoothly for the three Belgian Audi Club Team WRT cars, which made it to the top 15 on the grid, something unusual at Monza. Laurens Vanthoor qualified #1 in ninth, Müller put #2 in P14 and Mies #3 in P15. Except a minor issue with an engine ancillary part in free practice on car #1, nothing special was to be reported, with the new R8 LMS “growing” well throughout the sessions.

Car #1 had a brilliant race, always in the top group. Jean-Karl Vernay gained two positions at the start to run seventh in the opening laps, and even sixth for a moment, in
the middle of a fierce duel with the Bentley of Smith. After the pit stop, it rejoined in fourthwith Robin Frijns at the wheel, the young Dutchman having to concede one position to GT expert Matt Griffin. It then stabilized in P5 during the last stint, with Laurens Vanthoor gaining two positions in another of his usual very strong final rushes, in the 25 minutes of the race left after a long safety-car period. He crossed the line in P3, which later became P2.

The new Audi R8 LMS in Audi Sport Team WRT colors had a very consistent race, despite some minor troubles, with Frank Stippler running 10th most of his stint and Stéphane Ortelli gaining two positions in the second fraction. Nico Müller brought home the rookie car to a final sixth place overall on the track and ahead of the other new car.

Car #3 was also bound to a good result as it was running steadily in the top 20, first with Stéphane Richelmi, who took the start, and then with South African rookie Kelvin van der Linde, but unfortunately it got stopped by mid-race after 58 laps. “It’s a brakes problem and we don’t want to take any risk here at Monza”, explained Technical Director René Verbist as the car was retired.

The additional Team WRT entry, finished 13th in the Pro-Am Cup, with Bottemanne-Koebolt-Schothorst recovering well from an accident in qualifying.

The highly-competitive Blancpain Endurance Series will be back on 23-24 May with another round rich in tradition at Silverstone. Before that, the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT will already visit the UK, for the Sprint Series round at Brands Hatch on 9-10 May.

Blancpain Endurance Series: Belgian Audi Club Team WRT with the new Audi R8 LMS at Monza

Belgian Audi Club Press Release

Only a few hours after an excellent weekend at Nogaro for the Blancpain Sprint Series season-opener, theBelgian Audi Club Team WRT is on the road again, heading to the legendaryAutodromo Nazionale di Monza where kicks-off this weekend the Endurance championshipof the Blancpain Series. It will be an exciting rendez-vous, with no less than60 cars entered! For the Belgian squad, a weekend full of novelties, with threedriver line-ups significantly renewed and a stellar debut:Ortelli-Stippler-Müller will christen the Audi R8 LMS, the latest generation ofthe Ingolstadt racer which starts here its international racing career. Pairedwith two fast new-comers as Robin Frijns and Jean-Karl Vernay, Laurens Vanthoorwill start the defence of his 2014 Drivers’ title, while the third car will beentrusted to Richelmi-Mies-van der Linde.

Ahead of the opening round, Team Principal VincentVosse is both confident and cautious: “Thisis probably the most high-level GT championship in the world”, he reckons, “and 60 cars on the track is a proof of thatbut also a significant challenge. That’s why we have considerably re-worked ourline-ups and added drivers that are fast and assertive in overtaking, which isgoing to be crucial along the entire season. Monza, together with the Ricard,is probably the most difficult track of the season for the Audis, but we willgo there as determined as ever to collect a maximum of points. The debut of thenew R8 adds an exciting touch and yet another challenge, as a first race with anew car is never easy, from a technical point of view but also in practicalterms, as you have to get used to new procedures, for instance at refuellingand pit stops.”

Talking about challenges, the Belgian Audi Club TeamWRT has already been faced to a major one, when its #1 car was victim of aserious accident during Qualifying at Nogaro last Sunday morning. Notrepairable on the spot, the car had to be withdrawn from the event and anothersort of race started as soon as the diagnosis was pronounced. A group ofmechanics left France immediately on a van with a small trailer transportingthe wounded R8, arriving in Belgium in the early hours of Monday.

In parallel, a similar expedition was organized fromthe team’s home base at Baudour to Germany and fetched a new chassis from Audi Sport. On Monday the car started to be rebuilt and it will be ready on Tuesdayafternoon, on time to start the journey towards Monza.

Laurens Vanthoor and his new team mates, formersingle-seater star Robin Frijns and GT expert Jean-Karl Vernay will thus have abrand new #1 car in Italy. The Belgian is philosophical about this unexpectedstart of the season: “One good thing isthat I am not tired at all”, he confesses after being forced to a spectatorrole at Nogaro, “Of course, it wasdisappointing, but racing is also this. Let’s hope we paid our tribute to badluck all at once. I’ll be perfectly ready for Monza, a race which is nevereasy: it’s a very peculiar circuit, not very friendly to the Audis, and theintense traffic makes things even worse, but I look forward to a thrillingweekend.”

Sporting #2, the new Audi R8 will be entrusted to theexperts hands of Frank Stippler, a man that has been closely involved with itsdevelopment, and Stéphane Ortelli, with Switzerland’s DTM star Nico Müllerbringing his notorious speed skills. “Thenew R8 LMS is definitely a very nice and well-born car”, explains FrankStippler, “and it was interesting to workwith Audi on its development. The R8 LMS ultra was already an excellent baseand a car that has been the object of constant evolution in the last 4-5 years,so it was a challenge to make it even better, although there is always room forimprovement. I think the result is excellent, although you always would like moredevelopment time with any new car. A lot of small things are new, frommechanical pieces to instruments and buttons in the cockpit, and there is stillmuch fine-tuning to do. The objective is to make as soon as possible the new R8as fast and as reliable as possible and to have it completely ready for nextyear when it will be available to customer racing teams.”

At the wheel of car #3, Stéphane Richelmi andChristopher Mies will be associated to Kelvin van der Linde from South Africa.Although only 18, the son of former F.3000 driver Etienne, has already a goodexperience with touring cars and GTs at international level and will be makinghis debut on the “big stage”.

A fourth car will be entered under the Team WRT bannerin the Pro-Am category, for France’s Sacha Bottemanne and Dutchmen Max Koeboltand Pieter Schothorst, certainly one of the youngest trios at the start, astheir combined age barely reaches 54 years!

The Monza enduro will follow the usualBlancpain Endurance Series format, with track activity over only the weekenddays and the 3-hour race kicking-off at 4:30 on Sunday.

Blancpain Sprint Series: One win and three podium finishes for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT in solid show at Nogaro

Belgian Audi Club Press Release

It was an excellent start of the 2015 season for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT, as it left Nogaro in South-West France with one win and three other podium finishes in the first round of the Blancpain Sprint Series. Stéphane Ortelli and Stéphane Richelmi had a glorious weekend, taking pole position, the win in the qualifying Race and a close second in the Main Race, with team mates Christopher Mies-Enzo Ide clinching third twice. Frank Stippler-James Nash added more points to the harvest, thanks to a sixth position on Monday after being deprived of an even better result on Sunday because of a puncture. The bitter note came from the misfortune of car #1 of Laurens Vanthoor and Robin Frijns, which couldn’t take part in the races after being damaged in qualifying when the young Dutchman hit the wall.

Despite this set-back, Team Principal Vincent Vosse was happy: “It has been a very solid wekkend and I am happy with the results”, he commented, “Clearly, it was a pity to lose car #1, but that’s racing. It was a small mistake with big consequences, it happens and will happen again. For the rest, the entire team and the drivers had a perfect performance, as proven by the four podium finishes and the win in the Pit-stop Challenge. We leave France with many heavy points for the team and for Ortelli-Richelmi, considering also that our main rivals here, the duo Martin-Müller, are not entering the entire championship.”

Things had started very well for the Audis R8 LMS ultra, with the four cars of the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT in the top five in free practice, begun on a slightly damp track, and Laurens Vanthoor posting the fastest lap time. Qualifying though was going to be quite lively, with a number of drivers being surprised by track conditions in the last corner and suffering incidents of various nature there. This was the case also for three of the WRT cars. While Richelmi escaped with a simple spin, Mies had a scary moment as his car almost took off and failed to roll and Robin Frijns was unlucky enough to hit the inner wall of the corner, at the entrance of the pit lane, which was not protected by tire piles.

The crash wasn’t very violent but unfortunately caused non-repairable damage to the chassis of the R8 LMS ultra, which had to be withdrawn from the event. That was certainly the most frustrating GT debut that the young Dutchman could have hoped. The team got partial consolation from a brilliant pole by Stéphane Ortelli, with Stippler qualifying fourth and Mies seventh, with a car that had lost the perfect balance in the incident suffered.

The Qualifying race on Sunday kept all his promises, with Ortelli taking a perfect start and keeping the advantage ahead of the leading BMW, while Stippler ran in fourth. It was a hectic first lap behind the leaders, with many contacts resulting in a “big jam” that hurt Enzo Ide. “I was at a complete standstill in the opening lap, when the cars in front of me blocked the track. That made us lose a lot of time”, admitted the Belgian. By the end of the stint, Ortelli gave the wheel to Richelmi with a 7-second advantage. The younger of the Stéphanes made an excellent job in keeping the BMW of Martin at bay, despite the charge of the Belgian, and dealt perfectly with a safety-car period in the final laps, crossing the line first. Christopher Mies started his stint in fifth but managed to finish on the podium after two cars preceding him experienced trouble. Among them was the R8 of Nash, who dropped from fourth to eleventh because of a slow puncture. Young Richelmi was, of course, elated with his first win in international GT, although his race was everything but an easy ride: “I was a bit nervous before the start of my stint”, explained the Monegasque, “but I have a great team-mate and with a seven second lead I could relax a bit. I tried to manage the tires until the end, which was not easy with Maxime right behind me. The intervention of the safety car did not help either, but we made it!”

Main Race on Easter Monday, with sunny but chilly weather, had Richelmi taking a good start but having to concede the lead to Martin by the middle of the first lap, with Mies in third and Nash 12th. In lap 7, Mies passed Richelmi to lead the WRT charge. Car #3 was the first to pit, in lap 18, followed immediately by car #4, with Mies pitting much later, in lap 23. Second part of the race began with Ide in the lead, followed by the BMW of Müller only one second behind and Ortelli in third 4 seconds further. In lap 28, Ide had to let the faster BMW past, with Ortelli immediately taking the role of first pursuer from his team mate. The Monegasque charged as hard as he could to reduce the gap to less than half of a second but could not attack the BMW, finishing an excellent second followed by Ide, again on the third spot of the podium. “It was a great charge”, said Ortelli, “They were on new tires in the first stint, which made things difficult for Richelmi, while we had kept the set of new tires for the second stint, which worked well, but I would have needed a couple of more laps to be able to attack Müller.” It was definitely a very animated second stint for Stippler, who rejoined the race in P9 after the pit-stop and found himself tangled in a furious battle with Winkelhock, Salaquarda, Sperafico and Mori. The German passed one of the Audis and the McLaren (with which he had slight contact) and then the other Audi in the last lap to take a hardly-earned sixth.

Round 2 of the Blancpain Sprint Series will take place at Brands Hatch on 9-10 May, but before that the Blancpain Endurance Series will take all the attention as it kicks-off next weekend at Monza.

By Johan Laubscher

The Blancpain GT Series held its second set of official test days this week. Misano in Italy played host to two days of official testing for the Blancpain Sprint Series on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Misano test days were the second and final set of Blancpain GT Series official test days following the Blancpain Endurance Series test days at Paul Ricard last week. Four sessions of four hours each took place at Misano during the two days of testing.

Two Audi Sport customer racing teams took part at Misano, two cars from I.S.R. Racing and one from Belgian Audi Club Team WRT.

I.S.R. Racing fielded both of its Audi R8 LMS ultra cars. The results sheets listed the drivers of the #75 Audi as Marco Bonanomi and Filip Salaquarda. Anders Fjordbach was listed as the sole driver of the #74 Audi R8 LMS ultra whilst his brother, Thomas Fjordbach, is in China preparing for the opening round of the Audi R8 LMS Cup at Zhuhai.

Belgian Audi Club Team WRT only entered one Audi R8 LMS ultra at Misano. The #3 machine had Jean-Karl Vernay, James Nash and Robin Frijns as its listed drivers.

The combined results from the first day of testing on Tuesday saw the #74 I.S.R. Racing Audi R8 LMS ultra with the third fastest time, ahead of the #3 WRT Audi in fifth and the #75 I.S.R. Audi in tenth.

I.S.R. Racing set the fastest time during the final day of testing on Wednesday. The #75 Audi R8 LMS ultra was at the top of the time sheets with a 1:33.330 lap, the overall fastest lap during the two days of testing. The #74 I.S.R. Audi was again third fastest, followed by the #3 WRT Audi in fourth.

2014 VW Fun Cup champions rewarded with WRT Audi R8 LMS ultra test at Misano

By Johan Laubscher

The 2014 European VW Fun Cup champions, Eric Gressens and Philippe Crosset, were both rewarded with an Audi R8 LMS ultra test with Belgian Audi Club Team WRT. The Belgian Audi Sport customer racing team was out testing three of its Audi R8 LMS ultra cars at Misano in Italy last week.

Amongst the team’s preparations for the 2015 Blancpain GT Series, they provided the opportunity for Gressens and Crosset to test one of the WRT Audi R8 LMS ultra cars.

At the beginning of 2014 the European VW Fun Cup announced an incentive reward for the winners of the Fun Cup title in 2014. This reward would consist of a test session with Belgian Audi Club Team WRT and one of their Audi R8 LMS ultra machines.

By the end of 2014 it was Eric Gressens and Philippe Crosset who were crowned as the 2014 European VW Fun Cup champions in the #19 Colson Racing VW Fun Cup race car. They were then invited to join Belgian Audi Club Team WRT for the two days of testing in Italy, where they got the chance to experience the Audi R8 LMS ultra first hand, an experience that both say they will not forget.
