Edoardo Mortara clinched a great and dominant DTM race victory at Spielberg. The Audi Sport Team Abt driver was unstoppable in the 40-minute race 1 at the Red Bull Ring.
Edo started the race from pole position but lost the lead to fellow Audi driver Jamie Green. The Briton took the lead but only for a short time. The Audi Sport Team Rosberg and DTM points leader faced drive shift issues forcing him to retire from the race.
Edoardo Mortara took back the lead and since then never been challenged. The Italian controlled the race and crossed the finish line victorious ahead of Mercedes-Benz's Pascal Wehrlein and Paul di Resta.
Today's victory is the third one for Edoardo Mortara in the prestigious Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters. His second win at the Red Bull Ring after the 2012 one.
Mattias Ekström (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline) had a heroic race. The double DTM champion was flying with his Red Bull backed Audi RS 5 DTM and ended the race in strong fifth place after some spectacular overtakings.
2013 DTM champion Mike Rockenfeller (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) was eighth. Adrien Tambay (Audi Sport Team Abt) was tenth. Nico Mueller (Audi Sport Team Rosberg) was twelfth. Timo Scheider (Audi Sport Team Phoenix) was sixteenth. Miguel Molina (Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline) was eighteenth.
The second qualifying session and race 2 are set for Sunday.
