Gallery: The 2013 Audi R8 LMS ultra

By Johan Laubscher

The 2013 Audi R8 LMS ultra is the latest version of a successful R16 racing series which was launched by Audi Sport customer racing in 2009.

The current evolution of the car did have a difficult birth, as it had a prolonged homologation process, where the new rear diffuser was eventually disallowed. More information regarding the homologation saga can be read HERE

A number of 2013 Audi R8 LMS ultra cars had competed in the original full specification. However, following the final homologation the new aggressive rear diffuser has all but disappeared. More can be read about this HERE

Audi Sport customer racing released a photo-shoot set at the beginning of the year, which depicted the 2013 Audi R8 LMS ultra in its original specification, that being with the new rear diffuser. Last week they released another set, this time featuring a plain silver 2013 Audi R8 LMS ultra in the final 2013 homologation, that with all of the new 2013 components, minus the new rear diffuser, as it is fitted with the older R8 LMS / ultra diffuser.

The differences between the original 2012 Audi R8 LMS ultra and the 2013 version (in both forms) can be seen HERE

With a development freeze coming into effect for FIA GT3 cars, which should be in place for the next few seasons, the current evolution of the R8 LMS ultra will probably be the standard for Audi in GT3 racing for a few years at least.

The photos below are from the two above-mentioned photo-shoots. The corresponding photos have been placed together. On the left/on top is the original 2013 R8 LMS ultra and the final homologation version is on the right/on the bottom. The cars are virtually identical, the only difference being focused at the rear, with the two different types of diffuser.
