The prospect of more Audi involvement in the Chinese motorsport scene is very exciting for the brand. China is a major emerging market and one that has massive future potential for Audi. The involvement in local Chinese motorsport is a sure way to get the public excited about motorsport in a country where the popularity of motorsport is still growing.
In the last few years Audi have competed on Chinese soil at the Zhuhai circuit and at Macau. In 2012 a new initiative is dawning for Audi in Chinese motorsport. A new one-make championship will be introduced featuring the Audi R8 LMS. The championship will be known as “The Audi R8 LMS Cup.” The one-make championship featuring the exciting GT3 car from Audi will be a great addition to the emerging Chinese motorsport scene. A full grid of Audi R8 LMS race cars will be a very exciting sight.
The series will be organised by Audi China and will have a grid of 16 cars. Of the 16 car grid only 12 cars will be eligible for championship points. These 12 cars will be entered by Audi dealers and individual drivers who will all compete for the title. The 4 remaining cars will be entered by Audi China and will not be eligible for scoring points (guest drivers). The cars are busy being prepared for the championship in China with many test sessions underway. It is an exciting prospect of having 16 thoroughbred GT3 race cars, all from the Audi brand on track at the same time.
