Bathurst 12 Hour: Strong opening day for the Audi teams at Mount Panorama

By Johan Laubscher

The track action has gotten underway at Mount Panorama on the opening day of the Bathurst 12 Hour weekend. A total of eight Audi race cars are taking part this weekend and two of them topped the times during the four practice sessions on Friday.

Laurens Vanthoor set the fastest time during the second practice session in his #15 “Kangaroo” Audi R8 LMS ultra from Phoenix Racing. The fourth and final session on Friday also saw an Audi at the top of the time sheets with Christopher Mies setting the time in the #9 Melbourne Performance Centre-run Audi R8 LMS ultra.

All seven Audi R8 LMS ultra entries showed strong pace during the sessions on Friday. Four Audis were within the top ten during the first session, led by the #5 Skwirk R8 LMS ultra in sixth. The times amongst all of the competitors were very close all day and Vanthoor was the only Audi in the top ten during session two, when he topped the times. Session three concluded with another set of four Audis in the top ten, with the Phoenix Racing pair placing third and fourth. The final session on Friday saw Mies fastest, followed by two more of the R8 LMS ultra entries in the top ten.

The Kintyre Racing (PPE) Audi TT RS is being run in Class D. They performed well on the opening day and placed within the Class D top three during practice sessions two, three and four.

Saturday’s schedule will include a fifth and final practice session during the morning, followed by qualifying during the afternoon.

We wish the best of luck to all of the Audi teams and drivers.
